It was only a matter of time before companies like OpenAI and Microsoft began doing things that raise people's eyebrows. Without sounding all doom and gloom, I want to state that this week's Skeptics Corner highlights some of the many reasons the masses will struggle with the open adoption of AI tools, suites, GPTs, and the like.

Microsoft’s AI Recall Feature: Privacy Concerns Under Scrutiny

Microsoft's latest AI innovation, "Recall," has sparked significant controversy and is currently under investigation by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Recall is designed to take screenshots every few seconds, effectively creating a "photographic memory" of users' activities on their devices. Tech Deep Dive

Mike breaks down a complex AI tool or concept into understandable terms.

Hey everybody. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about coding assistants and kind of what they are, what they aren’t, and what you can use them to accomplish much faster. So, coding assistants like Devin AI, GitHub Copilot, Tabnine, and Amazon’s CodeWhisperer are tools designed to assist and augment your coding. They speed up your workflow by producing small fragments of code as you’re typing. It’s sort of like autocomplete on steroids.

Autocomplete in the past, or code ahead, would give you maybe one word or a function that existed somewhere else. You’d start typing it, it would fill it in, and you’d be able to hit tab and boom, you’ve got that function call. So that sped you up a little bit. What these new tools do is more than that. You start typing, and it could give you the whole next function, the whole next section of code.

The Important Parts

Tools like Copilot help with your workflow, but you need to scrutinize the code outputs. Just like I mentioned in my little article here, you want to follow the 10-80-10 rule. Start with the vision, type what you’re looking for, give it direction, let it do 80% of the work, and then come back to make sure that the code functions well and is concise, clean and well documented (hint: you can heavily use these same AI tools to document your code).

ALWAYS REMEMBER: these code tools are trained on samples of other people’s code. They might get something right functionally, but write it in such a way that the performance would be extremely bad or it may have other issues. Always verify the work!

Moving Faster in Your Workflow

These tools help you move faster by writing the more mundane pieces of code, allowing you to take it up a level in terms of high-level work. Over the next few years, we’ll likely see a real change in the coding landscape. The role of “code jockeys” or “code monkeys” might diminish because these tools can handle perfectly designed specs and architecture, turning them into code and debugging with much less human intervention.

What you should do is take a very skilled programmer and let them go with these tools. For new programmers, it’s crucial to teach them the fundamentals and make sure they understand the potential pitfalls. Testing and ensuring the performance of code is essential. You can use AI to generate a bunch of mock data or tests to stress test the system or function and ensure it’s performant.

Final Thoughts

These tools are literally what they call themselves—copilots. We should always be in the driver’s seat and keep the human side of AI in the mix. Coding assistants are transforming the way we write code, but the need for human oversight and understanding of fundamental principles remains critical.
